So I'm home, safe and sound. The trip home was uneventful in itself. Although I'd originally planned to be on Tracy's flight from Sydney to LA, her flights had gotten changed around (to rectify a 7 month layover in LA!) and she was on a 9:45am flight (mine was 10:50am). So this should be my last post actually from Australia. I'm in the computer lab at the university- we sometimes can steal a wireless signal on Tracy's laptop at the hotel, but not consistently. There's a line-up, so this really will be short.

So not too much new to report here. I've been seeing talks and that's pretty much it. Had dinner with Tracy, her new grad student Jon, and Nigel most nights. Tuesday night was a grad student mixer type thing at a beach in Coogee that Nigel and I went to (Jon also has a cold so stayed in). So I only have a few minutes as I am in the very crowded computer lab at the University that they have kindly set aside for conference attendees to use. They've asked for a 15 minute time limit, so I'm going to try and comply.

So I'm finally outta here! Onto a real motel. I got used to the hostel, and none of my room mates were ever problematic, so I guess I can't complain too much (it was only $20 AU a night, anyway). I don't think they have internet at the new motel after all, so I may not be able to update much (maybe once I get on campus I'll find a computer).

So day three of surfing was amazing. The water was even calmer, and with help from the instructor, I was able to catch and ride some unbroken waves into shore. Very cool!
Tuesday I took the train to the Blue Mountains and met Tracy and Carl. We did some nice hiking, but I unfortunately had started coughing earlier that morning and felt pretty ( Read more... )

oh, and can someone please post Grandma's post office box number? I want to send her a postcard and I remember all of the address but the post office box number. I think I know what it is, but after the nice surfing card and pictures Jennifer and I sent got completely lost because we couldn't remember the box number I don't want to risk it.

Surfing yesterday was quite successful, with me standing up on more than one wave and riding it all the way to the shore without falling off! I did get quite tired by the end of the lesson and had to get out and sit on shore for the last 5-10 minutes that the others were in the water. So apparently, when they said that I could have access to the computers til 11, they meant 11am, not 11pm, so my updating will take place once a day, in the morning.
Surfing yesterday was awesome! The surf was a lot taller and rougher than when Jennifer and I went in Tofino. By the end of the lesson, the surf was about 6-8 feet. Mind you, not ( Read more... )
