While I applaud the sentiment of becoming more active in one's community and life, the thought of spending that much time and energy on saving a squirrel strikes me as absurd. I could completely understand this if they were rescuing some endangered/protected species such as bald eagles, loons, other raptors like owls and hawks, or grey wolves...but a squirrel? ...personally, seeing as they're in season right now, I would have just put it out of its misery quickly and cleanly...and probably made stew.
That aspect occurred to me too - at the point the squirrel was brought in, it seems to me they'd've been much more kind to put it out of its misery. After a month of inappropriate care, the chances of it ever having a normal life are about zero.
But by far, the idiot who brought the squirrel in is the kind of person I run into faaaar too often among my co-religionists.
Not only that, but it would have been far cheaper for the animal clinic doing the work. In conservation work, species are sacred, one member of a prolific species isn't, however.
I do take your point regarding your co-religionists, though.
