Quick entry. 
Just saw 300 tonight and goddamn!  Best movie I've seen in quite a while!  Went well beyond my expectations, and has inspired me to do in the vicinity of 300-1000 sit-ups a day :)
Visuals were stunning.  Story was classic mythology at its best.  And I loved the richness and pride of the characters.  I am definitely going back to see

seee....... as I knew the guy who did Sin City directed this movie, there was NO WAY in fucking Hell I would see this movie.

Even as much as I love my classical history....

Well, the difference between Sin City and 300 IMNSHO, is that the violence in Sin City was.........how do I say it? Needless? It was violence for violence sake, and really served no purpose except shock value.
While war is a terrible thing, what the Spartans were rising against gave justification for their actions. I know blood is blood, but when there is value and reason behind swinging a sword it takes on a whole different meaning.

Basically what I'm trying to say is that it had a completely different feel than the violence in Sin City, and because the Spartans were defending their people, land, culture and integrity I think it's ok to drain any oppressors of their last drop of blood >:)

Really?

As a historian, I so wanted to see this - Rome and that surrounding area was my major focus so I love those kinds of movies to see how close to come to the original events - Troy was interesting - but back to 300 - the visials look absolutely stunning as well as the costumes.

Those guys in those days were just plain nuts... I might just give it a try and see if I can make it thro it - I'm just a pussy when it comes to gore and guts.
