Ad Astra ! It's that time again

Nov 11, 2006 14:51

I know, I know, so I've dropped off the face of the planet, and then suddenly here I am all in your face with a reminder that Ad Astra is coming.

I've been very preoccupied with LIFE, (you know what I mean); some good stuff has been going on in my life and some crappy stuff has been going on in my life. (Promises to give the general details ( Read more... )

Hope things get better for you!

And OF COURSE you can count on me. Though I'll be entering the masq, I'm up for running a panel on Japanese clothing/doing a kitsuke demo/workshop and whatever.

Is there a hall cosplay contest at AA?

Last year I was in charge of that. It was very small, just one judge with ribbons to hand out as he wandered the con and searched out costumers. I believe we'll have at least that again this year. I think it would be cool to do hall workmanship judging by appointment (it's something I've seem work at smaller anime cons), but there is the worry that we might get fewer masquerade entrants that way.

Or more, if you refuse to give them awards. ;)

I think those that want to enter the masq will enter, and it gives others a chance to see what it's like, and maybe give judges a chance to encourage them to enter the masquerade.

I do kind of like the "random" aspect of doing hall cosplay awards without scheduled times, since then a person who may not be thinking, "I want this judged" could end up with an award. That seems more fun and exciting to me, but more work for the judges.

If I can help out somehow, lemme know, since I can't help with the masq.

Put me down for a Wonderflex demo, 1 hour.

Done. ^_^

Maybe I'll actually get time to attend some demo's this year! LOL!

I'd like to do a panel on 'intermediate' sewing and finishing techniques. Seam finishing, stay stitching, understitching, top stitching, hemming techniques, and anything that might be useful to the self-taught costumer. I don't know if that's too specific for Astra, but it's something we haven't had before.

A non-wonderflex propmaking panel would be good, too. Paper mache, cardboard and hot glue, insulation foam, resin casting, paper clay, etc. I'm not the expert in most of them, but I could present a few parts.

Not my field, but a jewelrymaking panel might be cool and I can think of a few people with expertise there.

I really want to see Kate's SFX makeup panel again, and maybe one regular/stage makeup, too. I also really want to see Erica's proposed kimono panel.

Sorry I'm flooding you with suggestions; it's my sneaky way of running the ideas past others who have the costuming skills to run the panels I don't. ^_^

I could probably be of assistance on the paper mache, cardboard and hot glue aspect of props. ;)

I think that the finishing techniques is an awsome suggestion. Could you include a brief tutorial on the types of stitches and finishes often mentioned in patterns like "blind stitch", "french seam", etc?

I wish we could run this panel twice and get more cosplayers to attend. I often hear frustration from that quarter since they've stopped teaching sewing in most schools in any major way these days.

I to REALLY wanted to attend Kate's makeup demo. I missed last years because I was overprogrammed. The only demo I did make it to was the leather working one and only half of it.

As for flooding with suggestions. Flood away!! :D

Oh, Louise, I'd love to attend that one on finishing stitches and stuff. Sounds handy!

I've already mentioned the 2-hour corset workshop. Participants will need an old t-shirt they don't mind cutting up and a willing friend to tape them. I guess the con can provide the duct tape and brown craft paper.

Haha well we'll have to see if the con will provide duct tape and brown craft paper. Alana and I will have to head to head that. Maybe we can buy the duct tape in bulk, I know I can get the paper on a roll for a decent price.

I guess if we limit the number of people who can attend this panel we can make a meaningful budget.

Otherwise have people bring thier own tape, supply the craft paper, and have some extra rolls we can sell on the spot. What say you?
