Like most atheists, I wasn't always an atheist. In fact, I consider myself as having been quite religious up until my mid teens. "...the whole point of God was that you couldn't comprehend these things." Grew up hearing this, never questioned it openly even when my doubts were stronger than my "beliefs". Now I just think/know that that's such a lazily convenient way to explain essentially nonsense bullshit.

Yeah, definitely. It's not possible to have a debate anymore at that point. You just have to take comfort in the statistics that suggest that faith around the world is dwindling. Though that's no guarantee that things will continue down this happy road forever. Have you read A Canticle for Leibowitz? I'm not much of a fan of sci-fi, but I liked this one a lot - not in spite of but perhaps because of the sometimes lengthy Latin excurses and the characteristically Christian bleakness pervading the vision of the world after a nuclear holocaust.

I've read trashy sci-fi before and loved them; recently, i've started reading critically acclaimed ones on a coworker's suggestion. I haven't read/heard of A Canticle of Leibowitz, but from your description it does seem like my type. I love apocalyptic movies/series/books lol
