I had lunch with a guy I haven't seen in some time - Steve, who works at the Economist Intelligence Unit. Great food, by the way - the restaurant of the Sichuan provincial government's rep office in Beijing, so naturally the Sichuan food was amazing. Ordered the standards just to make sure. But I digress. Steve mentioned an article I somehow missed ( Read more... )

Well, now that 花椒 can once again be imported legally into the States, they oughta be able to do a decent job. That said, when I was back in the Bay Area over Thanksgiving-thru-Christmas (remember, that party at Jay's?) my wife was taken to a place by some erstwhile Beijinger friends of hers (I was in meetings) that they all swore was really good 川菜, but it didn't pass muster with the Fanster at all. Fanfan said it wasn't remotely spicy, and they were miserly with the Sichuan peppercorns. Still, I'm willing to try it. If you come out here this summer I'll stand treat for a sizzling Sichuan meal that will leave you sweatier than an Apache sweatlodge.

Are you also being sarcastic by asking people to share ‘corrupt’ stories here, in this public forum?

Have you ever heard any major multinationals bitch publicly about corrupt business practice in China? Rarely. Why? They are all in it.

I am very surprised that you could be unaware of such stories, especially given that you cover telecom industry, one of the most corrupted industries in China.

As to ‘German and French companies engage in bribery all the time in Asia’, hehe, IMHO, when it comes to grabbing fat contract, companies(of any country) are all 半斤八两.

Hi there, that last comment was interesting, eh? You must be busy with work. Or maybe you've started a new blog? I just posted on mine for the first time in awhile. I'm considering skipping out on grad school for a year to work in China. My romance novel is halfway finished. I'm loosely basing it on the plot of the Peony Pavilion by Tang Xianzu (the heroine's death is only symbolic in my version though). I've also had a few non-fiction pieces published. How is your job going? How's baby Guenevere?
