What do you think will be gained by telling the stepmom this?

Well mostly I don't want to be annoyed by him, but also it would be nice if he didn't die broken and miserable in a diabetic coma and/or alcohol related liver failure.

You might look up what kind of mental health resources are available in their area, and send them to your stepmother? Send her some relevant webpages about his condition(s)? NAMI.org has some good stuff. Arming her with knowledge may be a path to helping him.

Best of luck. In the end, people only get better if they want to get better. A supportive network helps though.
