By now a lot of you have heard that John Galliano, enfante terrible of Christan Dior, was filmed committing an anti-Semitic outburst a few days ago in a Paris bistro ( Read more... )

Yeah, I've been unimpressed at everyone rushing to defend him. UGH. THERE IS NO EXCUSE.

One thing I did like in the whole mess was hearing that Natalie Portman actually changed dresses for the Oscars. (I head about it on ontd_p, I think)

Otherwise, everyone else is making me look like my icon.

There are also lots of people hiding under the fact that they're still loyal to the Dior name and brand as a way to distance themselves from Galliano but still get to wear Dior clothes. I can't get the straight story on whether they fired him outright or if he's only suspended.

I bet he comes out of Racist Rehab™ and goes right back to designing for Dior.

Oy, yeah, that's been ... yeah jazzypom March 15 2011, 22:49:03 UTC
It's been a vortex of fail from the jump. But it seems that Dior has been that sort of Fashion house for a time, so Galliano's attitude would have more been in lock step over there, and it seems that they only suspended him because he got caught.

I'm sorry that you've had to watch it, you know?

I hadn't thought of Dior as a racist fashion house itself aside from the fact that there's a woeful lack of diversity in the models they used to choose and still do. Very few Asian, black, or Latina models model for Dior.

It's the opposite of Givenchy who, when he was designing himself for his own house, used exclusively black models for a period of years for his shows (which could be seen, on the other hand, as fetishization) -- I always respected him for that.

EXACTLY. It's the ugly part of the id talking, and it's talking straight to the id, with all social niceties gone. That's how drunk people are.

(Makes me glad I don't talk.)

The outpouring of support for Galliano is worse than Polanskifail.

Which indicates a really weird sort of morals dissonance, doesn't it?

"It's okay to advocate the genocide of the Jews who were victimized and slaughtered by Hitler during World War II, but criticizing a wealthy Jewish film director for being an admitted child rapist and fugitive from justice? HOW DARE YOU!"

It's literally wrong on every possible level. I couldn't be that evil if I TRIED, and I'm an ASSHOLE.

I remember people giving Mel Gibson the same benefit of doubt years ago. I've been drunk plenty of times and there's no such thing as anti-Semitic drunk.
