Let me be the first to say that while I would love to celebrate with you on your big day, I will still be just as happy for you if I'm not invited. Weddings are tricky things and you have to draw the circle somewhere. I do hope we have a chance to whoop it up, Firstie style, in the end.

You both are very loved and I'm sure everyone will understand, regardless of whether or not they're invited. :) As long as you are happy, that's what matters!

"but let me just reassure you, it isn't because we don't love you"

Lies! I have nothing but contempt for our B-list.

I'm not sure on the etiquette, but another possibility would be to put off such a party until a couple months after the wedding so you don't need to plan much of it before the wedding.

You totally should NOT be worrying about this! You have to work with what you've got, and I can't think of anyone (of Firsties, that is) who wouldn't understand if you couldn't invite them. Please don't bother about inviting beowabbit and me -- he doesn't do weddings, and I'd just be all lonely at the dateless people's table anyway. :-) Have a wonderful time on your special day, and we'll be there to party with you another time.
