You know what I hate? Arguments. I hate participating in them, I hate being witness to them, I hate how bad I am at them, I hate how hard it is to stop myself from diving into them, even when they are completely stupid and/or don't involve me in any way. It's one of the few things I really, really dislike about living with so many people: it seems ( Read more... )

I claim world worst debater status. For all the reasons you name, plus add a stutter.

For your first paragraph, please stop reading my brain. I really, really, strongly dislike confrontation for the precise reasons you mention.

Also, Geo finds it much more satisfying to simply tell someone, "You're WRONG." And leave it at that.

It then becomes their responsibility to figure out why they're wrong. ;-)

That's so me it's scary. I can handle it in the classroom (almost always), but anywhere else. . . . I can about handle it with my husband (who is very good). Can't deal with arguments with friends or colleagues.

And Someone on the Internet is Wrong! is a big problem for me.

I have a much easier time with people who are Wrong on the Internet than I do with people who are Wrong at My Kitchen Table While I am Cleaning Their Breakfast Dishes. Online I can just about always manage to just walk away. At home...my success rate is not as good. Heh. I can see a classroom setting making it a lot easier, though. You have the whole class framework and you are in front of people so you (presumably) have to at least make an attempt to act like an adult.

In front of the classroom, I am fully in my Eccentric but Adult persona. It rarely even wants to slip anymore.

Wrong at Your Kitchen Table While You are Cleaning Their Breakfast Dishes-that's hard to take indeed.

I like arguments, and am good at them. But only when the other side is willing to be reasonable, which, as you know, doesn't happen much. And I can't stand strife, or argumentativeness, which is different and does no one any good. So I understand that part totally.

And home should be a place of peace and refuge, regardless.

I'm guessing moving out isn't an option?

Yeah, it's the strife and argumentativeness that get me. But really, how are you going to avoid those things in a house where there are so many people and everyone is either married to or the child/parent of someone else? Thankfully my room is a refuge of peace when I need it, but it seems unrealistic to expect the rest of the house to be that way, as much as I wish it could be. Can't beat family for pointless, contentious bickering and we're all family here. *grin*

*g* Well, actually, my family isn't. Possibly because we don't all live together, also possibly because bickering that isn't meant as teasing is considered antisocial. But I realize this is not usual.

It's all down to culture, isn't it? And every family has its own. A personality type that would do just fine in one family culture can't hardly stand living in another. But we're kinda stuck with family, aren't we?
