Sad news; I've just had a phone call from one of my mother's former students to say that Maria has died. I didn't see her again after that chance encounter, more than a year and a half ago - she never took up my invitation to call round for a cup of tea - but I'm very glad that I did see her then, and that she was in such good form; apparently she

I don't think it can really be counted as a loss for me, as I'd had contact with her once in the last thirty years. But it's sad that she couldn't continue to enjoy her retirement, as she was doing when I saw her.

I am too - and though it sounds a sad end, I think it's better to know rather than to wonder. And I'm still very pleased that she had coped for the thirty years leading up to her illness.

It was an odd relationship - a handful of meetings more than thirty years ago, then one chance in encounter in 2014 - but I am glad that I did see her one more time, and that she seemed happy then.
