Help?

Every time I restart the computer, my home page resets to "http://cool-search.net/?aid=35", even when I reset it or change it and click "apply". I was able to get rid of that once, but now I don't remember how and I REALLY want to get rid of it ...

Help?

What I've been doing recently (for sites that I don't want) is just blocking all the sites that I can. Under tools, internet options, go to the Security tab, and then chose "Restricted Sites" (the one that's got the big negative sign in a red circle) and click the Sites button. then type in "http://cool-search.net" and click add. You might also want to uncheck the box that says "Enable third-party browser extensions" (under tools>internet options>advanced and it's under the "browsing" category) that just makes it so that internet sites can't add their own toolbars to Internet Explorer.

Hey, I just remembered something that you can do! Usually there's some sort of a program that keeps doing that. You could go to start>control panel>add or remove programs. Search for any programs that don't look familiar and uninstall them. I found programs that didn't look useful like "lycos supersearcher" "casino on-line!" and "search easier and faster!!!" ok, those are not real names of programs, but they're good for examples =)

Just be careful (as I'm sure you would be), you don't want to uninstall IE or anything.

Hope this is helpful!

Hi! I just stumbled across your journal while looking up other LDS people on LJ... I hope you don't mind suggestions from a total stranger, but it sounds like you've got an Ad Virus (basically, somewhere along the line some ad software got installed on your system -- it'll reset your home page and is probably giving you extra pop-ups, and it might also be mining data (such as what sites you visit, what stuff you buy online, that sort of thing) and reporting it back to an ad company.

I'd highly recommend you try downloading and running Ad-Aware from Lavasoft. The basic version is free and works really well for ferreting out the really nasty Spyware. My husband and I have started burning it to CD to take out with us when we do tech support for friends and family.

You can read a bit more about protecting your system (including using Ad-Aware) out at TechTV, in the article Top 10 Ways to Fight Malicious Code.

Hope that helps!
