"If you're going through hell, keep going." - Winston ChurchillKanda awoke to stillness, the near-silent whisper of falling snow. It coated his bare shoulders and his hair, which fell loose and limp and already wet over his cheeks and back ( Read more... )

The simple 'no' would have satisfied Heine, it was a response to his question and his own vocal musing didn't require comment unless the tattered looking teenager had felt inclined. At least he was still pegging the guy for a teenager; Heine knew he was right on the cusp of his teenage years and possibly brushing up to his early twenties. He could have asked to be sure but really it would be a waste of his breath asking after information he didn't give that much of a damn about. Still, he wouldn't have minded sitting in silence for the rest of the night with the guy. In fact in most cases he preferred the quiet. For Heine it was often the best way to share another person's company if he had to, but for anyone around him it was usually far from one of those comfortable silences. It seemed the stranger had a similar opinion ( ... )

For a moment Kanda's eyes slid open. He didn't speak, but breathed a low quiet hmph, not scoffing or dismissive but simply acknowledging. He shifted the angle of his head a little, resting his chin a bit more comfortably against his chest and adjusted his arms where they were folded. The only signal of acceptance that he gave the offer was to close his eyes again ( ... )

Generally if anyone were to ask after Heine's track record when it came to loyalty and keeping his word the chances are it would have come back in a mostly positive light. He did usually turn up when he said he was going to, he did generally keep his word and he did normally complete any jobs left in his hands. There was also a chance that his track record would come with a hefty note attached however. Yes he'd get it all done and keep his word but there was no guarantee that the manner he'd do it in was always suitable nor safe ( ... )

From practically the moment he had opened his eyes, Kanda's gaze was fixed on the young man across from him. Given how tired he'd been the night before and how quickly he'd settled back to sleep after the other's arrival, it was little surprise that he hadn't really bothered to have a look at him in the firelight. But if, by the light of day, Kanda had been struck by a fleeting sense of similarity between this man's white hair and that of a certain irritating Beansprout he knew, he was struck far more by the difference between the two in the shadows ( ... )

The only acknowledgement Heine gave to being stared at was a slight arching of his eyebrow, but it was fleeting and certainly not indicating that he was unsettled by the look. He was pretty sure he knew what that look was as he'd given something similar to the stranger when they had met in the deserted city. It was a look of assessment, of taking in little details at a glance while there was little to worry about and storing them away for a time when they may be relevant. But there was something slightly different in the way the swordsman was looking at him and Heine couldn't place it; he had no way of knowing he was being mentally compared to another ( ... )
