"Mojang does not exist to make as much money as possible for the owners. As the majority shareholder, I’d know. Every time a big money making deal comes up that would make a lot of money, it’s of course very tempting, but at the end of the day we choose to do what either makes the most sense for our products, or the things that seem like fun for us at Mojang."
This is a direct quote from Notch's "
Literally worse than EA" blog post on his website, which I
talked about here.
All I can say is... wow. Just wow. My, oh my, how the times have changed just
three short months later. (Then again, I suppose getting $2,000,000,000 would probably be the most "fun for us at Mojang.") It makes me wonder if maybe those
bukkit guys were actually aware that this Microsoft deal was in the works, and that is primarily why they were reacting the way they were. If that is the case, then I take back pretty much every bad thing I said about them.
As I've said in the comments over in
owsf2000's
post about this, I now think that all of the more recent news to come out about Mojang, including
all that EULA stuff, was just a precursor to this Microsoft deal. It could also explain Notch's sudden, inexplicable
turn around regarding his
previous stance to the Facebook purchase of Occulus Rift.
So... yeah. Until and unless something new comes along to change my mind yet again, I'm pretty much done with defending Notch and Mojang. And if I wasn't already pretty much over Minecraft anyway at this point, I certainly would be after all of this shit. For what it's worth, at least, I still don't think that Mojang would be "literally worse than EA" after being bought by Microsoft. I don't see Microsoft as worse than
EA. I just see them as sort of being laterally equivalent to EA, maybe a wee fraction of a step above EA (despite
everything). In any case, I'll just copy/paste what I said over in one of my comments on Mord's post concerning this whole thing: "I'll just say the same thing that I said when
BioWare got bought by EA: 'This won't end well, mark my words.'"
And though
Spoony was specifically talking about the unreleased, at the time,
new XCOM game, I feel that
his rant about it fairly accurately sums up my feelings about this whole Mojang/Microsoft issue here, generally speaking. (With the possible exception of the "this game suuuuuucks" bit, as I don't think that Minecraft sucks at all, at least as it currently exists. It's just that I think it will suck once Microsoft starts mucking about with it.)
So here, have a remix of that that someone made about the Ultima series using sound clips from that and other Spoony rants:

Fuck you, Notch, you killed Minecraft, fuck you!
