I have a reading assingment for all of you. Most of us grew up in Oconomowoc - the definition of white suburbia. We had all the best opportunities - schools, healthcare, food, parents. We could play outside anytime, it was okay to play outside at night. Ghost in the Graveyard in the summer, catching fireflies. Reading Clifford, Dr. Suess. Computers ( Read more... )

I havent read that and to be honest I probably wont but I feel like college itself has been a HUGE awakening. Traveling to MATC I think has also helped to show me this. Even around UW campus there are a lot of people that came from the same type of background as us, simply because we were given better education that people in places like the south side. we are lucky people. I think that may be part of why I am excited for summer, we get to live it up again and really appreciate it this time!!!

and thats all well and good, but at the same time, its important to step back and realize exactly how good we've got it. I have a hard time believing God intended for people to live in a war zone while we live in the suburbs...i think a lot of that is just chance. thats a personal belief system though - up for debate on either side.

anywho, we've all gone through tough patches...we've all had struggles, and I dont deny that. I just think its important to look at life through someone else's eyes...why knock it, or dismiss it as "eh you read that shit and then two weeks later you're back to normal." while that may be the case, at least it impacted you for a little while. Everything you read, do, learn, is a growing experience.

i agree with you alison and then i don't. You had the food pantry, i have food stamps. i also used to live in a trailor. so i know what it feels like to be semipoor. i know a lot of people will read stuff and say it changes their lives, but they just feel that way for like a week. i agree with you there ( ... )
