I've been reading a lot about how the script was supposedly character-based, and back to the original spirit of Trek and blah de blah, and was very optimistic.
... and then I read about time-traveling Romulans. I agree. Skeered.
i wince at the shiny sets too. if they were honest about being faithful to the original, don't you think the crew would be trawling around in a tin bucket with, like, 50s hairdos or something?
feh.
i want so much for this to be good, but feel gravely that a whole generation will be betrayed (there's a plot for them).
OMG THEY SUCK. What happened to evil robots from humanity's distant past?? I'm afraid that not even St. Simon of Peggster is going to make it worth seeing in the theater. OTOH, if I can sweet-talk my daddy into going with me...he's the one who sat me down after school one day and said, "Here, watch this! This guy's named Spock, and he's got an R/C brain!" Revenge is a dish best served thirty years later.
My dad introduced me to Trek, too. My family watched TNG together, and those are some precious memories.
I'm crossing my fingers that Karl Urban remains as awesome as he has been in previous roles. Also, that he gets to say McCoy's iconic line. And that the Romulans are not lame, because we already know that the time travel is going to be.
i saw that EW article too and i looked at the pictures but i stopped reading when they started talking about the plot --- i want to be surprised and still hold out hope that it will be good!
