Sounds like me. A few months ago I started looking into truck/bus training. The truck schools around here charge $3500-5500 ($5500 gets you the highest quality of training)...... 10 grand seems pretty high if you ask me.
But now I drive a coach bus for a rather large company ;) The standards aren't toooo hard, but if you've never driven any standard before, it could be a little difficult to learn.
I've got friends who are, and who have recently been in, trucking. You should at least read some of mickstover's lj entries from the last year, to see what some of the hassles are like and if you could deal with them. I'll talk to my other friends to see if they would be willing to speak with you more about it, as well. Weigh the pros and cons as much as you can, before jumping into something like this.
It's not a bad idea. The only disadvantages I can see about this is being away from home a lot(especially if you go long haul), the long hours behind the wheel... OH! And if the truck breaks down way out in the middle of nowhere. Other than the last one, I wouldn't mind the first two. But I'll read your friend's LJ.
The company offering those courses has a session starting April 21st, but it's doubtful I'll be able to have everything in order before then. I'll have to wait for their next one, which is May 19th; so I have a little bit of time.
But this is something I "do" feel strongly for, big bro, for some reason. I just hope it won't be a dissapointment like what happened when you went to seminary school. :/
I think the hardest part, right now, is convincing dad that I've not gone completely insane. He already knows I have some insanity; but at least I know I'm not totally lost. :p
Oh, I know you're not insane. And I'm sure you'll think things through. But I do have a tendency to offer advice when it's something as life-altering as changing your profession, entirely, when you haven't ever mentioned such thoughts before. I guess that's just the big brother in me still trying to look out for you. :)
And what you're doing is most appreciated, big bro. *smiles and hugs*
I've always believed that things happen for a reason. Could God have placed this idea inside my head as a possible new calling? *shrugs* I wish I knew.
