"Doctor Strange."
"Oh, come on. The magic is cool, but he talks like a fortune cookie."
"Not as bad as Professor X does," the first guy retorted, and sat back in his chair like he'd scored a point.
Billy put down his tray and slid into a seat next to his new roommate. New school, new people, same old debate.
"Professor X isn't cool according to anyone," said roommate said, picking up his fork. "Maybe Batman, if you're gonna talk coolness."
"Batman?" Billy said, as casually as he could. "What about Superman?"
His roommate -- Joey, the guy's name was Joey -- just grinned at him. "Hey, the car alone wins it."
"Car versus being able to fly?"
One of the guys who'd been debating in the first place nodded hard at that, but Joey shrugged and twirled up a forkful of pasta. "That's part of what makes Batman interesting, though. It's easy to be a superhero if you can fly. Batman -- he doesn't have any special powers. It's just him."
"Plus Catwoman is way hotter than Lois Lane," one of the other guys added, and that was the end of the conversation: it wandered off into something else.
Billy leaned over and said quietly, "You read comic books?"
"Sometimes." Joey shrugged. "You?"
"Not recently," Billy said, and watched Joey grin again, and tried not to think about why he liked that he could do that.
