So we made it to DC. Leaving Florida was crazy. The last few weeks with all the good byes and packing were physically and emotionally exhausting, but I felt a huge sense of relief when we got in my sister's car to go to the airport. Welcome home! Sounds like a lot to juggle, but also like you're doing great. :-)

You can get blackout shades from Lowe's or HD (though we prefer the brand they carry at Lowe's). Just measure your window, bring the dimensions in, and they will cut them to fit. They are super easy to install - just make sure your drill is charged!

Good luck getting settled. I'll actually be in DC for work in November - we'll have to make plans!

You guys are only going to be there for a year? I didn't realize that. Then do you go back to FL? Or what happens?

We have blackout roller shades in the kids rooms from JCPenny. They work pretty well. There's a little light that comes in from the sides, but overall they do a pretty good job. I think these are them: http://www.jcpenney.com/dotcom/for-the-home/departments/window-treatments/fair-square-prices/everyday-prices/blinds-shades/66-cut-to-width-saratoga-roller-blackout-shade-/prod.jump?ppId=13cab4b

We got cheapo paper black out shades from home depot. They are basically construction paper blinds that you cut to fit. They stick on. We ordered them online. They totally work!!!
