So this is actually two questions, right?
1. I refuse to store delicate items in the damp basement. This includes linens, family heirlooms, and so many photographs that I refuse to admit the quantity. My grandmother's piano is probably damaged beyond repair by the dampness, and the cabinet of her antique sewing machine will need a lot of work. When we can afford to sheetrock the basement and build more shelves, then it will be fit for storage. (If Mike will leave me some room. He has big plans for a theater, pool table, etc. He must be expecting an inheritance.)
2. Yes, I am insane, but that has nothing to do with the storage situation.

I've seen it. Are you insane?
