Backyard Nature Observation

A couple of days ago we (okay, really the human)noticed what looked like a strange leaf stuck near the top of the fence. She looked a little closer and realized it was a woolly bear. It was light from end to end, which should mean a mild winter. But it is was also dead from end to end - so it might be about as reliable as a clock with a dead battery!

ANM saw one a few weeks ago that was all black except for a tiny bit of brown on each end. That looked ominous - but since it was in Mississippi, she didn't get too worried about it. It's hard to imagine what a "severe winter" might mean down here.
