Actually losing important jewelry is one of my biggest phobias. I never wear my grandmother's ring. And the engagement ring terrifies me.

But once you get one, post piccies!

the boy is getting near shopping for one. which means i remind him at least once a week i will kill him dead if he spends too much on it. also, he cannot put it in food to propose. people who do that bother me. i will eat it then. and we'll both be sad.

A couple of interesting articles looking at the two month salary thing - here and here.

Basically, the two month salary thing was a promotional push by DeBeers at a time when a good chunk of the population had lots of disposable income, and they thought they could create a market for substantially more expensive engagement rings.

I figure spending "enough" is less important than getting a ring you'll like to wear. Spend less and get something more practical, I vote. (Disclaimer: I don't plan to have any kind of engagement ring, so my opinion is probably moo.)
