While I didn't attend 2009, I did attend 2008, and even then it was elbow-to-elbow. FC staff did what they had to do. Moving to a hotel was a necessity. I agree with Rex that the fact it's more expensive does distress me, but I'll deal. This is a free market economy; if I didn't like it enough I wouldn't go. But I like FC enough to justify the added expense.
As for the poor and unemployed furs, if he's so concerned for them, why not dispose of the suite and spread that cash around to some of them so they can attend? The con is still 4.5 months away, and some creative scrimping and scrounging between now and then can get someone there, IF it's important enough to them. It's not FC's responsibility to account for their attendees' financial status.
Yes, the primary reason we moved was 1) We sold out the entire Doubletree in 2009 in 72 hours and the Holiday Inn in less than a week. Thats just not tenable. 2) If we had to move we wanted to increase what was in the area for attendees to enjoy (One of the Doubletrees weak points) so we at least get more bang for our buck. Above the Doubletree you only really have two place to go. Downtown SF or Downtown San jose. It took us two more years of negotiations to get the rate as cheap as we could t a point we felt was acceptable. Yes its a little more more expensive for the con but you do get a lot more for that money. Keep an eye on the messages form the chairs to the Furcon LJ over the next few months to get a clue as to just HOW much
( ... )
Have you considered reducing the cost you do have full control over - that of registration itself? Even for the attending membership, $15 of it is marked as a contribution to the convention's organizing body, rather than budgeted to cover actual convention expenses.
I understand you are a charitable organization, and you want to build up a strategic reserve, but taking a 33% cut from people who just want to go to see their friends and enjoy the event seems excessive.
I'd be willing to bet that a good portion of that money is actually going to cover expenses that are not part of the actual con budget, like storage and capital equipment purchases.
