This should not exist.

That said, take the time to look through the customer-submitted photos; they're well worth it. The reviews, as well, are freakin' hilarious. :)

No, no way. That is a legit product? Not only are those pictures funny, the dripping sarcasm in the customer product reviews is pretty funny also.

Yes, it's a legit product. And a damn useful one.

The whole point is that, AFTER you park the car, you can slide the seat back to give yourself a little more room, mount the shelf on the steering wheel, and get some work done. When you're done and ready to go, you pack up your papers and laptop, disconnect the shelf from the wheel, start the car, and go.

It's especially useful for people like service technicians who spend their day driving , doing stuff, and filling out paperwork.

There's an even better product for service technicians that already exists and shouldn't be illegal. It's called a clipboard.

clipboards don't give you someplace to put the laptop you're required to do data entry on so that you can use both hands on the keyboard in a comfortable position.

And the shelf would only be illegal if you used it while the vehicle is in motion.

That's what the seat is for. Notice again that seats aren't illegal...

See where I'm going with this?

One thing I didn't mention in my previous comment is that there's a line of rugged laptop computers made by Itronix called the GoBook. Metal cases, designed to be able to be dropped from decent heights with no damage (as long as the hard drive isn't spinning), you can drive over it with a car, etc...

One of the options you can get for a GoBook is a carrying handle that's designed so that you can hook it over your steering wheel and use both hands on the keyboard. -- just as if you'd hooked this shelf onto the wheel and set a regular laptop down on top of it.

I do see that there can be a legitimate usage for the thing, but my inner cynic tells me that a certain percentage of buyers are going to be all, "Boo-yah! Now I can stream video during rush hour!"

Because so many humans are idiots.

And also, yes, I did freeze the thread up above. See my comment there for details.

It was not my intention to engage in any kind of personal attack. I sincerely apologize if any of my replies to this post seemed that way.

I'm sure you didn't. Teh Internets do not for easy tone-reading make. :)

I cheerfully accept that because I have a very large bunch of friends, not all of those friends are going to get along in hunky-dory glee. I simply reserve the right to remain friends with everybody and blissfully ignore any disagreements amongst them.

So. Laa, laa, laa.....
