Keith Johnstone wrote about Mask/Trance work in Impro. It's pretty insane. I've seen examples of it in videos, but never experienced it myself. Not directly, anyway. I think that a mask ceremony is a compelling way for a regular person to become a superhero.

I like to imagine the hero creating and trying out many masks before he or she finds the perfect superhero mask. Those prototype mask trials could be fun scenes, revealing reasons why they are each imperfect superhero masks.

Later in the story, the hero could find that the changing climate in his/her locale requires a new mask. One person could eventually be several heroes and/or several people with the same mask could be the same hero (or set of heroes).
