Oh that is all so very sad. Sad about your co-worker saying that to you and so very sad about the other guy loosing his son. In the case of the inane comment, I think you are right to see them as the one with the problem. I prefer to think of your co-worker as being totally inadequate rather than vicious but it is hard to see how somebody can be that insensitive and that stupid but it is just possible that she was trying to find a way of communicating with you. People who never have been touched by death are sometimes totally unable to even imagine what it might be like. Even so, like you I think I would have lost it. Stupid is a complement. I think you sounded pretty restrained under the circumstances

She got someone fired the last time she tried something like this as she pushed her to the point where the other woman grabbed her wrist. I hate to think that people are just pure evil but this woman comes the closest I've ever seen. She seems to enjoy hurting people but I am a very stubborn person and like to win so as hard as it was to come into work the next day, I did. I won't back down and if anyone is going to leave before we lose our jobs it will be her.
I need to post happy things sometime! I posted pictures a long time ago but something happened and now I can't post them (or can't remember how I did it the first time!). I have some pretty photos of Cocoa Beach and will try again this weekend to have a happy post!!

There are two very easy ways to post pictures to LJ. One is to use your scrapbook account, if you have a paid LJ:
It will give you links to post directly to you LJ.
The other is to download semagic LJ client (very small, easy program) and then use it to post any picture you have uploaded on the web (and you can use http://tinypic.com/ if you don't have an album anywhere).
Use semagic to resize, post behind a cut, or make pic clickakble to a larger version!
It's my computer. I don't know why I didn't realize that. Something happened and we had it looked at by our computer guy, aka Monkey Man--hairiest guy EVER, and we lost flash player which somehow ties into photobucket. I think I will be able to post from my daughter's laptop so I will try that.
Thank you, I will probably have to either get an external hard drive and re install everything on this one or get a whole new computer. Either way, the external hard drive will probably be a good investment. I don't want to overextend until I am sure I have a job that will last last for a while.
I never know what to say to people when they piss me off. I really don't know where I got the strength to do it as I usually start shaking and look like a total idiot.
I hope she got the message.
For now. She's done things like this to other people in the past and has been written up for it. The funny thing is, I was content with what I said to her but she thought she'd better go do some damage control and told the supervisor. That's when other supervisors, managers, and Human resources got involved. She kind of screwed herself on that one as no one else would have ever known. This time, she just got a slap on the wrist and I can understand that as it was just my feelings that got hurt. Let's just say it's been very quiet at work today and that makes me very happy:)
It's appalling how insensitive that person was - doubly so because she's made these kinds of references before to you.
What is her age, do you think? I'm hoping really young, for obvious reasons. ;)
Good for you for speaking up and making her squirm a bit. I'm sure she gets away with that sort of self-absorbed remark all the time in her life. Maybe she'll think before speaking next time.
She is 39 and socially challenged to say the least. She finally snagged a husband last year--from Guyana, rumor has it he was looking for a sponsor to get him and his son citizenship. She treats the poor man terribly but she truly seems to enjoy it. If she were younger, I'd think I'd understand a little bit more as young people sometimes don't understand death and I know that I may have said things that seemed insensitive in the past but this just came out of the blue and I think it was malicious. She's made comments to me before but has never crossed the line like she did the other night. It just makes for more tension but I've got broad shoulders.....among other body parts!!!

I told her to just wait until she has to watch him take his dying breaths and then she'll know how it really feels.
... was great and totally appropriate. I hope she got the message.
And what a horrible story about your other co-worker.

and I think it was malicious
That makes it all the more important (and commendable) that you spoke up and let her know you were on to her. *g*
