My boss just told me that she can say whatever she wants about any race and I can't do anything about it. This is since I called her on the fact that she has said racially offensive comments to myself and other staff members. So apparently it's ok if she is racist since she is chinese but no one else can be racist about the chinese. The comments ( Read more... )

In the realm of worker claims against their employers, I believe there's something called an "unfriendly workplace." This is different from sexual harassment, but similar in that you are subjected to offensive, demeaning statements and behavior.

You should maybe take notes on this. Just in case it gets worse.

I don't know where you work, but if it's government funded, she is absolutely not allowed to say those things.

But meanwhile, you are allowed to say that you don't like it. And let her know that she is making demeaning comments about your family and friends. Document that too. This woman sounds like she needs some diversity training.

You need to tell someone about this - if she's saying that kind of stuff to you, imagine what would happen if she said it to a patron (who might go and complain to the media or something).

I took it to the library board president and we'll see what happens. I've also started looking harder for another job.
