LJ Idol Topic 2: The Missing Stair

Mar 20, 2014 21:49

When I was a child, I devoured books like they were food. And when I ran out of my own books to read, I'd run through my mother's library. Though now I can recall that she had mostly mysteries and a few romance novels, she had a few of the old hardbound Readers' Digest condensed books. One of them contained a story that I have yet to read in full, ( Read more... )

Wow. I haven't thought about the DeBolt family in years. (Never read the book, but remember the TV adaptation of the documentary.) I'd forgotten they were local originally...

I never saw it! It was only in the last couple of years that I found out it had been on television. Must find it!

I like that instead of just telling us the story of the book, you related why it mattered to you.

It's funny; initially my post had much more of how the booked worked, but I realized that this was a topic post, not a book report. Though if you get to know me, you'll find that it's almost impossible for me to talk about a book without doing just that lol.

Thank you!

Wow - it's evident that the topic really did speak to you in a very profound way. I've never heard of this book, but the way you described it bridged the gap for me. I could see the stairs as you described them with all of the special needs kids on them. I especially liked the detail about the crochet girl.

Really well done. I enjoyed this so much!

Thank you! The girl I mentioned was born with no limbs. There's a comment in the book about watching her crochet with the hooks she had for prosthetics that always stuck with me; there's also discussion of her dressing and undressing - complete with earrings! - her Barbies. I could barely do that as a child with normal hands, and I've never been able to crochet.

Sounds like a cook book! I can relate to a lot of what you wrote as an adoptee who never felt like she fit in. Hugs. AW
