When I was a child, I devoured books like they were food. And when I ran out of my own books to read, I'd run through my mother's library. Though now I can recall that she had mostly mysteries and a few romance novels, she had a few of the old hardbound Readers' Digest condensed books. One of them contained a story that I have yet to read in full,
