brian's computer's malfunction, my problem somehow

i spent the bulk of tonight working on brian's computer. he's got this very interesting problem where a few seconds after turning on his pc, his monitor goes blank as if the pc has gone idle. i hooked his monitor up to my tower and it works fine, so the monitor's not the problem. the dell website seems to think it's a power supply issue, and i ( Read more... )

Ok, at first thought I thought it was the video card too. It may actually still be, in a way, but I think I have a way of testing it. Try either hold F8 during startup or booting up with the Windows XP CD. To do the latter you may have to adjust the bios so the comp will boot from the CD first. If it boots up in safe mode, the problem is most likely the video card, and it either a software or hardware issue. Go to Control Panel>System>Hardware>Devices Manager and check to see if there are any question marks next to the video card. Also, see if you can turn down the acceleration of the card by going to Display>Settings>Advanced button>Troubleshoot. Just slide it all the way to the left and restart, see if that helps. If not, I could still be a short on the video card. Oh, also check your hertz settings in that same window and make sure your monitor can handle the same setting. That could cause problems ( ... )

dear lord al, you got your computer shit together. some guy from some computer place came and replaced the motherboard, and it magically works again, though, i suspect that something inside the computer is overheating, why else would a motherboard go out? seems to be working though, and no longer my problem. yay.

Hmm, I don't think the motherboard was the problem. Did he replace the processor too? I guess if the fan went out on it, the overheating could have caused something like that to happen. Anyway, its fixed so I guess its all good :)
