Using trial and error is essential when testing overly complex code: you simply can't rely on automation itself because any good automation would have to rival the original code itself in terms of complexity. And never let developers touch a UAT or Production Environment, they might impose workarounds that are quick and easy to them, that never get documented, and then are lost and cause great pains to Operations.
