My Take on Prop 8

For those who don’t know what Prop 8 refers to, I’ll direct you to the Wikipedia article. Basically, it was a proposition in California to explicitly eliminate gay marriages in that state, and annul marriages that had already been processed. Although actually, even approx. 25% of San Francisco apparently voted for it--keep in mind in any major city like this, there are large quantities of conservative elements--asian, hispanic, black families--goes against traditional values.

Yeah, but their support will be largely saturated already, unless the debate is framed differently. When the debate becomes about love, it makes it harder to counter; however, I don't think the protests today will be largely about love. Ah well, I'll do my best.

I completely agree! I've noticed an entirely conclusion-jumping-right-wing-styled-FRENZY to go out and protest the Mormon church. Now don't get me wrong, I don't agree with the LDS church in any way shape or form, but this nonsense has got to stop.

Funny enough, after taking a broader perspective, I disagree a bit. The underlying idea of the protests is to rally the gay community to act and to show that the greater community supports them as well. I'm not a fan of protesting churches, but the Mormon church has done some awful things lately.

I agree that we will ultimately win the battle by winning over the hearts and minds of others - and we do that by being more open and having conversations with those around us ( ... )

Thanks for the enlightment. Between your post and the wise words of another friend of mine who's participated in many protests as well, I now have a broader understanding of their purpose and will be attending the march tomorrow. I appreciate you taking the time to respond.
