Bonfire Party!

It was amazing how much work was necessary for a small get together, but also how quickly and easily it went with the help of another person. Especially when that person happened to be on staff ( Read more... )

He didn't know the girl throwing the party, but he'd been drawn to it by the promise of drinks available and the potential for some good company. Not that the tavern in the stables tower didn't have plenty of drinks, but he did miss having a bunch of company sometimes. It was so different from being constantly in the Hanged Man.

And, well. Parties tended to be pretty good places to get information. Especially if there was alcohol available.

Varric had grabbed himself a drink from the table, then headed over to the bonfire to stand by it and people observe.

"Why am I not surprised to find you here, Varric?"

Not at all surprised, and definitely pleased. Varric was always a good person to have around. Moreso when there was little else to do besides get drunk and wander around.

Now there's a voice Varric was always happy to hear.

"You know me. Someone mentions drinks, and I'm there."

He turned to grin at Anders, taking a sip from his cup. "It's good to see you here, Blondie." He wasn't fooling himself with his chances to get Anders to have a drink, but at least he was actually at the party.

"I should have known better."

He smiled faintly, coming to the dwarf's side, his arms folded, idly. It wasn't a bad party. But, honestly, it would be better if he didn't have a spirit yammering in his head the whole time.

"I didn't have anywhere else to be... so why not?"

"Never under estimate the allure of alcohol." He smirked a bit. "Or people watching."

He grimaced slightly, shifting his weight.

"You're telling me. Who would've thought I'd miss the days when Hawke was always showing up at the Hanged Man to get me to go to exploring the Wounded Coast to find some flower or something?"

"The latter I understand more than the former, these days."

He shook his head, absently picking bits of frosting out from the lines of his palm. Good job, Anders. Cover yourself in pastry.

"Or tromping down through the blighted Deep Roads after who knows what."

"So you've said. Don't you worry, Blondie, I'll be working on that."

That seemed to be Varric's most important task these days: - aside from information gathering and journal stalking, anyway - getting people to remember how to have fun. He chuckled at Anders's attempt to de-pastry himself.

"Guess that means you liked the cakes." And an amused snort at that. "I'd take the Deep Roads over this any day. At least there we knew the way out. Mostly."

Having already found Aara, Zhaneel was feeling pretty confident about approaching and speaking with others. When she spies Varric nearby, she heads on over in his direction, ears perked forward.

"Varric, heyla!"

Another familiar - and welcome - voice. Varric smiled at the approaching gryphon, raising his cup to her in greeting.

"Hey, Feathers. Enjoying the party?"

She fluffs her facial feathers and flattens them again at his greeting. It was a nice change to have people greet her not only pleasantly, but happily and with eagerness. It took a bit getting used to, but she rather enjoyed it.

She bobs her head in response, thrumming a soft sound deep in her chest that could very well be a gryphonic version of a purr.

"Indeed I am .. It is rather enjoyable to see people out and about .. there are quite a few of us here.."

Varric took note of her gestures. He still didn't have a lot of them worked out, but he liked learning. It would make that gryphon story he was writing a lot more realistic. Not that anyone'd know but him, but it was the principle of the matter.

He nodded his agreement. "It's a good turn out. I get the feeling that people here could use an opportunity to have a little bit of fun. Good to see many of them taking it."

If only because people who did were less likely to start getting so stressed out that they did stupid things that would affect the rest of them. Well, that and he'd spotted all of the people he had something of an investment in here, which was good on a more personal level.

One thing to be said of the gryphon was her occasional forgetfulness toward the fact that she was somewhere so entirely different with persons unused to the mannerisms of a gryphon. Though those around her seemed to learn both quickly and willingly enough, it slipped her mind that they might find the process new and slightly difficult with her avian features being rather unreadable ( ... )

At least Varric hasn't actually taken to carrying his notebook with him and jotting down her mannerisms as they were made. It'd probably put a damper on the conversation if he was constantly scribbling and making little doodles during it. That, and it wasn't as though he really needed it to remember what he learned.

He chuckled slightly. "So it seems, from what I've learned of people here so far. I'm not one of them, though. Much of my time back home was spent doing little more than playing cards, drinking in a tavern, writing stories, and thinking up excuses to get out of guild meetings."

There were the frequent side trips he went on with Hawke for one thing or another, too, but those usually served to help out with those last two things. And maintaining his network of contacts, but then, that was pretty much constant while doing the rest of that.

Varric smiled when she tilted her head at him. "I am indeed. More so now that I've been joined by good company."

It wouldn't have been a matter of annoyance in any way should he have chosen to, being as how the healers and such of her world tend to walk around with information of every kind and were rather prone to studying their fantastical companions; particularly those new to the forces that might not have been raised around them.

She studies Varric and chortles softly at his proclamation. "Alas, I was rather one of they, although it was as much the fault of my surroundings and the war we were in the middle of." She shrugs her wings slightly at that before continuing, "I find myself far better here than I ever was there in terms of relaxation .." She rolls her gaze to him, amusement in her own. "Although perhaps not so much time in taverns or playing Hind and Stag (chess)."

Her beak gapes slightly a moment later when he assures that he is having a good time and that it is thanks to good company. That last bit shuts her beak with a click and brings a flush up her nares (nostrils), completely unused to praise. "I could say much the same,

His lips quirked in a bit of a wry smile. "Ah. You have something of an excuse, then, war can dampen the efforts of even the most devoted relaxer." It'd yet to stop him, of course, but then he was something of a master at finding the time to have a drink or a game with friends while still getting things done even under the most dire circumstances.

"I'm glad. One less person I have to worry about making sure they're remembering to have some fun now and then." Then he smiled again. "If you're ever looking to change that, you can find me in the tavern in the stable tower. I'm always up for company or a game."

And yet another smile at her last comment. "Good to know the feeling's mutual."

Vie didn't know Bryn either, but the sight and sound of familiar people had brought her along anyway. Her attention was lost in the bonfire when she came to pause by Varric. Shooting him a glance, Vie smiled. "Having fun?

She never was good at starting conversation.
