“For my prize,” Lucius spoke in a deep voice, “I want to cast a spell on you that will change your skin color when you lie. You will be forced to tell me the truth.”
Harry took a deep breath. He thought Mr. Malfoy was going to turn him into some slave. Was he getting off easy? Why? He cursed his own recklessness once more. “How long does it last? Can everyone see it? Is it dangerous?”
“Only others in the Manor can see it. How long it lasts depends on how much you fight being honest. Lies will slow us down. It could be as short as a week, or as long as a month. It is only dangerous if you continue to lie or omit facts, but of course a Gryffindor would never do that.”
“Dangerous how?” Harry looked suspiciously at the blond. Although he supposed he deserved it if it was dangerous for being so stupid as to make this agreement with Lucius Malfoy of all people.
Lucius shook his head. “Planning on being foolish? This spell will tap into your magical core; each lie takes away a bit of magic. I thought Gryffindors were brave?”
Harry knew he had promised. But it was also true that this might give him a chance to break the curse on him. If Lucius had found the basic creature so fast, maybe he could answer the rest of his problem. But this man was the essence of Slytherin. “What do you get out of it?”
“Answers,” Lucius began to tap his wand against his leg. “Are you done dithering?”
Harry grit his teeth before snapping out, “Fine, just get it over with already.”
Lucius grinned inwardly before raising the wand to just over Potters head. “Verum…” he began the spell work and Harry closed his eyes against the swirling wand work that was making him dizzy. It seemed like ages later, but Harry opened his eyes, happy that the wand work was done.
“Now Harry, let’s test this out.” Lucius grinned like a shark. “Are you in love with my son?”
“No.” Harry answered with a shiver in return.
“Rumor has it that you fought the Dark Lord and bested him every year at Hogwarts, it this true.”
Harry tried to fight against the compulsion to answer, but started to feel dizzy so he answered sharply. “Yes.”
Taking a sip of his drink, Lucius pondered for a moment. Although Harry had the distinct feeling he was being played with like a cat with a mouse. “What happened the first year between you and the Dark Lord?”
“I had the Philosophers Stone hidden on me by the Mirror of Erised. Tom died when I touched the body he had possessed. He returned to spirit and fled.”
“If I hadn’t just cast that spell I would think you were lying. You mean to tell me the Headmaster allowed you, a child of eleven years old, to possess such a dangerous object and then left you to defend yourself against the most powerful Dark wizard of our time?! He also showed you a borderline dark object that has been known to drive grown wizards insane? ”
“He was away and besides it’s a thing with him, not that I knew it then. I kind of figured it out over the years. ” Harry shrugged. “He used me like a pawn. He knew I’d seen the Mirror before.”
“You say your touch ended the possession. How?” Lucius cocked his head to one side. “Was the Mirror in the school previously?”
“Dumbledore said it had to do with my mother sacrificing her life for me. He turned to ash and fell apart. He let me find the Mirror earlier but then stopped me from seeing it when I kept returning to it.”
“Did you believe him then or now? What did you see in the Mirror that made you return?”
“I believed him then but I don’t think I do now.” Harry noticed the tips of his fingers turning emerald green.
Lucius chuckled darkly. “You seem to still trust the old fool. Lies to yourself can also turn you green.”
“Slytherin green, of course. How can I change it back?” He noticed an odd tingling that started when his fingers began to turn color. Was that his magical core being used?
“You failed to answer my other question. What did you see in the Mirror the first time?”
Harry looked away. “I saw my dead parents and they could see me too. I went back every night.”
Lucius shivered. No wonder the mirror drove people mad. But why would the Headmaster endanger the Savior and all the rest of the children in the school by having the Mirror there. Had he really set up the whole encounter? He took another drink. “It will turn back in the morning. Tomorrow we will discuss your second year. I may also have more questions about your first year.”
Harry rolled his eyes. “I hope there’s a good reason for me to relive all this.”
“You are starting to sound like a Slytherin.”
“No need to insult me.” Harry turned on his heel and left. Lucius chuckled darkly before mild annoyance nipped at him. He hated not having all the answers. More information was needed; it would require patience. But it had been very fulfilling to see the honest Gryffindor turn Slytherin green. Draco would have loved it.
Thinking of Draco reminded him how pale his son had become on news of Potters sterility. Had he forgotten? Or did it remind him of something to do with the case that needed completion? He wondered what Draco could do with the information now that the divorce was a done deal. It at least explained why Harry didn’t care about his supposed children. When had the Gryffindor found out? Perhaps he could find out some more for Draco as well. The Weasley girl must have known for years, but how?
Yet his mind was still in shock over Dumbledore’s actions. Endangering the welfare of minors, using students like pawns, sending Potter into a suicide mission and harboring borderline dark object. Would the precious Ministry of Magic say? Lucius smirked. He had picked the right spell and would learn some valuable information along the way that he could use to his own benefit. It was time for another drink.
