“Busy Brain”
It was one in the morning, but Draco Malfoy could not sleep. He paced back and forth, often contemplating the idea of pushing Harry off the wall while still in his gargoyle form. It would serve him right. How dare he keep this information to himself! If he brought it up to appeals court, he would have to reveal Harry’s secret which is why he’d pushed it to the back of his brain to begin with! Wasn’t the whole gargoyle thing enough to be getting on with and the case? Oh, how he could almost taste revenge.
Potter, of course, didn’t want him to retaliate. But what could he do? Whatever Ginny had done must have been a combination of Muggle science and magic. The very thought made Draco shiver. It had to be very, very dark magic. And magic of this magnitude always has a price. Would someone forfeit their life by the end of this? Did the Potter children even know? He remembered their detachment having seen it in cases before where one parent puts down the other parent when they weren’t around. He suspected it was a combination of that and trying to distance themselves from their so-called father.
He fumed as he paced, his long night robe fluttering behind him. It would snap out at the sharp turns when Draco pivoted. His father had made a few points against Potter staying at the Manor and Draco feared they were coming to pass. How annoying. This was going to mess up his cases win-lose ratio! Didn’t anyone care what this was doing to him?
Lucius had said Potter could drag them all down. If Draco’s career survived the humiliation, if the particulars came out and all knew he hadn’t had any idea beforehand it would paint him a fool. Who wanted a fool for a solicitor? This would have to be handled delicately and discretely. Potter’s secret couldn’t come out to the public. He rubbed his temples. HOW?
He shook his head and turned his attention to another aspect. Was his father also right that his feelings were getting in the way? It was clear that Potter didn’t seem to care for him, or anyone that way. But it could change. But for the moment Boy Wonder had seemingly become a Slytherin overnight and nothing was getting by his walls of secrets and emotions.
Why hadn’t there been any word from the Weasley family? They must surely be rallying around their daughter and taking her sides in all of it. So that probably meant neither Ronald nor Granger are speaking to him. Did the Weaselette manage to break up the Holy Trio? Or are they still in the dark? Is Potter keeping even more secrets from them too? Did Ginny tell her family? Would she even care that her one-time husband was dying a horrible death?
No. If they had, or if they cared at all, the Trio would still be together at the very least. Either they knew nothing or were told lies to make them turn from Potter. Weasley and Granger both had turned on him before, more than once. Ginny had started more than one vicious rumor back at school.
“What did he ever see in her?”
Well, he could research the potion or spell and see if he could discover what it was, but he wasn’t that knowledgeable about Muggle sciences. And with a sinking stomach, he knew he needed to speak to Granger. He needed to talk to Potter about it more too. What a mess. Harry probably wouldn’t want to go near a relationship ever again. At the very least, it would be a long time.
The other question bothering him was the change in his father’s behavior. When they spoke earlier in the week he’d been his usual curt and nasty self. But he was practically civil in comparison today.
“The gargoyle could be draining his negative energy. It couldn’t be quick enough for me.”
Draco suddenly shivered. It was a feeling he was all too used to having, “What has my father gained over Potter or thinks he’ll gain? Otherwise, the old Lucius would have thrown Potter out already, despite Draco’s situation. ” He paced again.
Draco stopped, smacking his forehead with his hand. He just realized Potter didn’t want HIM to retaliate, but others could. At last, the knot in his stomach released. Plotting and scheming he could do in his sleep. He began to slowly pace once more as he wondered why he was even getting concerned over revenge for Potter? The wizard could take care of his own life. Maybe he had killed the Dark Lord with sheer luck, but he’d done it. He’d seen signs of wild magic from Potter over the years, signs of a powerful wizard. It would be best to keep on Potter’s good side, as it were. So any revenge would have to be done delicately or Boy Wonder would flip his wig.
If Harry wanted to take this battle on, he could have at any point in the divorce proceedings. If his best friends turned on him he would be doomed to life as a gargoyle as his heart slowly turned to stone. So they were out, that left who? Was there anyone else that Potter cared enough about to keep on living and able to love again?
After all Potter had done for the wizarding world, it seemed beyond comprehension that this should be happening. A secret so big it can’t be spoken of to anyone else. Even if there was someone to support him, it may be too late already. Just the fact Potter was turning into a gargoyle every night spoke volumes about how well he was faring emotionally, all alone.
That left just Potter. Hopefully he could get some real honest answers out of the stubborn, recalcitrant Gryffindor. If not he’d need a bloody time turner! But the things scared him badly. Playing with time was not for fools. There had been a rumor in school that Granger used one for a whole year to attend extra classes. Silly idea that. If I get that desperate I’ll just buy one.
He stopped once more and called for a house elf. All the pacing had made him hungry and ready for a good stiff drink.
