What'd you say?

Yesterday I was sitting next to a woman on the bus who had just finished "A Million Little Pieces". I asked her what she thought of it, we talked briefly, and then I put my iPod headphones in. When it was her stop, I stood up to let her out and told her to have a nice afternoon. She told me to take care of my hearing and to also have a nice ( Read more... )

What volume do you keep them on? It's possible that they were so loud that she could actually hear your music, and that's why she felt comfortable making such an intrusive comment.

I do tend to keep them on kind of loud, but the two or three times I've had people to tell me to watch out I've had them on pretty softly, with lighter music (i.e. not punk or hip-hop). I know they couldn't have been too loud because she was very softspoken and I could hear her even with them on.

hmm, maybe she was trying desperately to yell something at you the entire bus ride, and you just didn't have any idea??? ...haha okay, so i'd guess that wasn't the case. actually, my first thought was the same thing as above -- that she was annoyed because your music was so loud it was bothering HER, and she thought that would be a kind of nice, backhanded comment that would make you think twice about turning your iPod up so high next time. but, if that wasn't the case...then maybe she just 1. knows someone who was affected by the iPod-too-loud problem, or 2. she works at an ear doctor's office & they are consistently warned about the dangers of iPods ( ... )

The fact that I thought about it enough to write it down proves I was having a procrastination Friday as well :) What are you doing Fourth of July weekend? Could we possibly meet up at some point?

There have been a lot of articles recently that have talked about hearing damage caused by ipods. It's definitely a legit concern (of yours, not random people's!), especially if you use the ear bud style that comes with ipods - those can be SUPER bad because of the way they fit in the ear.

I've seen quite a few people make comments like that to random people having a smoke. I'm a non-smoker (and am allergic to cig smoke, even), but that drives even me up the wall!

Interesting point about the shape - it doesn't even seem to get that much music into my ear. Did those articles happen to mention a better kind of headphone?

Any kind that doesn't go *in* your ear is better for you, as it lets sound escape. For my personal tastes, I've found that I'm really unhappy with dirt-cheap headphones for my ipod. I don't need anything fancy, but I haven't found many under $20 that sounded decent. I've got the $20 Sony ones that clip onto my ears (with no band between them). They're ok.

i'm with you. i've heard all that stuff about the ear buds, but seriously, there are so many worse vices. i always have my ipod on too loud, but it's maybe an hour max out of 24 hours and it makes the commute bearable.

your life is so awesome, it needs a soundtrack.

"your life is so awesome, it needs a soundtrack."

Now why is that not iPod's slogan? I think they have a good ad campaign, but yours is so much better!
