I've just dropped Mr. Crane off for his second official day at preschool (the first was a week and a half ago, right before spring break happened). As I left, he was helping one of his teachers put caterpillars in new chrysalis into the butterfly station. He was so stoked!!! I am so relieved to have him there. I will be about due for some hairs when I'm there next month (I'm getting my hair done tomorrow). Please book an appointment for me in your kitchen salon!

It's on! I don't officially do color here yet, but if you don't mind buying your color at Vain I will be more than happy to mix and apply it for you. (I'll tell dylan what to package up for you). This, of course, is only an option if you don't mind washing it out yourself in my bathroom. I am thinking about getting a portable seat and bowl, but am not sure how deep I'm going to go into this kitchen business. We'll see!

This makes me want to buy a plane ticket, seriously. I am playing with the idea of a Christmas red to strawberry blond ombre...

that is super interesting, your take on hipsters. I totally agree, even if coming from a different spot (more NYC/Phila than PNW, where I have not really been). I always feel like the bay area is this weirdly suburban/midwestern feeling despite being NY level expensive and more international. But I also have to remember, SF proper, anyway, is so small compared to those other places. And then Berkeley has more of a retro comfortable feeling because it's more spread out, or something? There is some hardcore dorkiness there, with the University - I always loved seeing REAL nerds (high waist pants, sweatshirts, no fashion desire/sense), kind of refreshing vs. the posturing. But yes, I did think Oakland had some more real hipsterness. And SOME parts of the Mission/Bernal Heights had the andro hot gay/trans hipsterness. All this after just spending a little bit of time there, though, so I am just babbling...

SF is so tiny, and they refuse to beef up their urban density - which for sure contributes to the watering down of fashion.

Berkeley is just straight cozy. Berkeley don't care. But I like the posturing! It's at least fun to observe.

ugh, you should see Chicago.. snoozeville. At least working in an art school I see a bit more posturing. But I know what you mean. NY has the STYLE from all people, all different ages/classes/cultures etc.

I also just remembered, aren't you from Delaware (I remember Alice & Jenene saying they had been to your wedding in the DE when I was liivng there - I got my PhD at UDel). I feel like Philly and to some extent Baltimore have this longtime underground/subculturness - more goth than hipster but maybe some aspects of goth were the hipsters of the 90s or something? Anyway, I really noticed it more when I first moved down from NY - so many more tattoos, dyed hairs, piercings.. not necessarily in a good way, but at least it was dramatic. I was thinking the slower economy makes for a richer subculture, because people don't have to rush themselves to change all the time to fit the latest marketing look or just, like, fit in enough to make the $ it requires to live there.

Bay Area style is abysmal, part of the reason why I am sometimes embarrassed to say I'm from there. Ugh and double ugh.

Hey I know I'm kinda a stranger but I'd you have a moment while you're here and will at any point just be in a place where I could pass by and meet you in the flesh, I would love it.

Hey now wait! I think that hailing from the bay area is totally cool. It's a fantastic place to live. The east bay in particular is a terrific place to raise a family. There are crazy amazing foods to eat, people who are very patient with little ones, and every day is bling bling BEAUTIFUL.

But hip young people? Meh.

Awesome hipsters? That's what I'm talking about! MILLENNIALS ARE GREAT! You can't even tell if they are gay or straight!

You totally would have been a costly kid back in the day, it is too your scene!

I too had some experience with SF in the very early '00s. I also found it to be international. I also thought that there electronic music scene was the bomb (it really was). But even then I noticed that kids here couldn't dance very well. Too chill to feel self conscious about becoming bomb ass dancers? I don't know. In any case, I enjoyed it because while I was considered a totally not great dancer back east, I could tear the rug with a circle around me in SF. But! None of that is hipster culture. There are definitely young, artistic, urbanites out there. They are monied and often fashionable, but hipster they ain't.

I miss being lecheous with you.

One of my best friends from high school went to Berkeley in the 90s, got into the dance scene, and people were so impressed with her uninhibited San Diegan dance moves that she got a job with a go go dancer agency, and she would dance in cages and on stages at a couple of raves/clubs/parties every weekend night!

They exist, sure. But even your photos just go to further illustrate that they aren't very cutting edge. Seriously, kids in Seattle rule the roost.
