I always said I would never get a Tumblr account because A) I don't understand how it works, and B) I don't have room in my life for another online time-suck

I’m on tumblr I’ll have to look up my user name lol It’s not very journally. Lots of fandom stuff tho and lots of content I don’t see elsewhere. I’m not on there much. I also wish everyone had just stayed on lj!
I'm sure I'll have fun noodling around on there. It seems to have gotten a bit more chatty since the first time I looked at it (years ago now), when it seemed to be literally nothing but endless, comment-free reblogs of images. I didn't see the point of that, but now there appear to be more text-based posts, comments, meta, etc. So we'll see!
I also wish everyone had just stayed on lj!. I'm with you on this MW.
I joined Tumbler but never understood how it actually works. I'm gonna follow Kelly's post and try to pick up some helpful hints. Same with the discord thing, it all baffles me.
*rubs hands together gleefully* I've never got to tumblr initiate anyone before!
Caveat that I have precisely 57 followers on tumblr, so I'm maybe not...a great example, depending on what you're looking for. But, when I went to tumblr, I knew that as a screen-reader user, I wouldn't be able to participate in a lot of the photos and stuff and decided y'know what, fuck it; I'm just gonna have fun and be as niche and weird as possible.
What you post about really depends on the audience you're trying to attract. My blog- Raven Cromwell--tends to be a pretty even split between poetry, lefty politics, and my rarepairing fannish loves of the moment.
I've found a like-minded community whose blogs are about evenly split between textposts and photos and my feed ranges from Aime Cesaire to starwars and hp to beautiful reposted poetry to the politics of other countries.
I guess what I'm getting at is there's not really...posting etiquette--oh, you'll get people saying you shouldn't post about x character because they're not popular here--but you

Thank you, thank you, my dear! This is super-helpful; I appreciate your time and effort in typing all this out. I would never have figured out the tags otherwise.
I think I'll do exactly as you say -- indiviudally check the blogs of people I want to read, rather than relying solely on the chaotic feed.
Thanks for all the tips! I've already noticed some drama that I happily skip, but it's fun to see so many old friends. I'll look forward to the fannish content.
I don't plan to give up LJ or DW (at least not while they're still accessible), because I still love the communities here, plus the chance for longer journaling. But Tumblr looks as if it will be fun. (I've tried rooting around on Discord, too, but so far, I find it a lot less user-friendly or intuitive.)
I definitely hear you about the "too old" thing. Everyone has made me very welcome so far; it's not that. But the overall vibe is just generationally different, I can feel it.
I'm totally in the same boat. I signed up for Tumbler awhile back because I heard somewhere there was fandom activity there, but I never really figured out how to navigate it. Same with the discord thing. I'll be following this post for helpful hints.

I've done a bit of playing around on Discord, and I share your response of bafflement; I haven't found it nearly as user-friendly (so far) as Tumblr.
