We have a fruitcake recipe from my mother that P has tweaked a bit. It is marvelous, but we can't have it because of carbs and sugar. I'll see if I can find it and send it to you, I am quite sure that the chefs of clan Kelly are more than up to the task. Fruitcake can indeed be made badly.
I'd love the recipe for Lash's mom's marvelous fruitcake. As soon as I'm back on my feet, I plan to do some baking. (I had grand intentions to make lots of Christmas cookies this year, but the best-laid plans. . .)
"mysteries did not always need to be solved. Like fruitcake -- sweet, spicy, and nutty -- they were best simply enjoyed."
So very true.
I don't understand all the hatred toward fruitcake. My dear mother-in-law used make little loaves as gifts every year and I always looked forward to hers. And I got it all to myself as Mr madeleone wouldn't eat it if you paid him (silly man--more for me then). That sweet lady has been gone since 2010 and I still miss her and her lovely fruitcake.
It's certainly true that there's a lot of bad fruitcake in the world (anything bought in a supermarket, for instance), but when you get a good one, it's a delight. Your mother-in-law sounds like someone I'd like to have known.
People always seem to underestimate Pomona's wisdom--it's the gentle, pragmatic type, and serves her so well, as it does here. I'm with Pomona--I actually like (some) fruitcake. And it's my opinion that there is no cake that isn't an absolute good.

Frankly, I kind of miss the stuff.

Thanks for sparking those memories, my dear.

And you're right -- how bad can any cake be?

Where I live, there’s zero tradition of fruitcake… but now I’d like to try it ❤️ thanks for sharing this tasty drabble :)
