I totally agree stereotypes have taken over our power to think for ourselves. They do play a role in creating an identity for ourselves and others. I liked the incorporation of the reference to one of shakespeares texts. I believe it is important to connect aspects of life with literatre as literature is influenced by ones life. So keep connecting literature with your entries as they support your belief and make your journal seem interesting. From writing your thoughts on stereotypes maybe you could compose a creative piece say a story or poem based on a particular stereotype this is just a suggestion you could do if your bothered lol.

Stereotypes are the norm of todays society! lauraking223 March 28 2009, 10:53:21 UTC
Hey Kells!!!

I agree with your LJ entry about stereotypes. THEY ARE EVERYWHERE! But, like you said we ourselves stereotype as well! So, how do we stop this? People say "don't judge a book by its cover", but I think everyone does, no matter who you are! I love how you added the typical stereotypes that are used more than often in our society! It was excellent! " I wear red, therefore I am emo", I read, therefore I am a nerd! I've gotten the last one PLENTY OF TIMES said to me and about me! But how can we stop the typical stereotyping? By telling people to stop judging, society is based on judgement! It's completely ridiculous! WHY can't we just be who we are, and people love us for that! I said "be who you truly are" and if people don't like that, then thats their problem!

Take care Kel!

who are you, who am i? flawed_calla March 29 2009, 08:36:48 UTC
Stereotypes have always been at the center of our social interactions, and im not sure about for you but for me at highschool they were what defined you. I wonder now though if we also define ourselves based on the assumptions and stereotypes that other have placed upon us, and the way in which they have defined us in their minds??
i loved the inclusion of Shakespeare's 'the merchant of venice'... i think that shylock easily represents the cost of stereotypes upon our lives as we follow him throughout the play. but we are also presented through shylocks rebuke "If you prick us, do we not bleed? if you tickle us, do we not laugh? if you poison us, do we not die? and if you wrong us, shall we not revenge? If we are like you in the rest, we will resemble you in that." a character trying to break free from a stereotype placed upon him.

Kelly i agree completely with what you have said.
When i read the story 'The myth of the latin woman: i just met a girl names Maria' it really got to me in so many ways. I, myself being a latin woman, found that this story really explained the kind of stereotpying i've been dealing with throughout my entire life and that im sure people everywhere have to deal with also. You have a really great way of putting your point across and saying what u feel, keep up the good work and i look forward to reading more!

hey kell

I totally agree with what you have written about stereotypes. They play such a huge factor in our everyday lives. I myself know i can be stereotypical at times, and i don't even mean to its quite sad when you think about that we al judge each other fro what stereo tupe they may come under than actually getting to know a person :(.

Can't wait for the next LJ kell
