We watched a documentary from PBS in mythology today interviewing the late Joseph Campbell, a mythology scholar. I think George Lucas was in charge of everything; it took place on the Skywalker Ranch and both Campbell and the interviewer referred to their favorite scenes from Star Wars a lot. aw! joseph campbell is (or rather, was) pretty awesome. but i've seen parts of that interview, and i know what you mean. it was a miniseries (i think there were five or six hour-long segments) and not all of them are that bad. in the last one he talks about technology (particularly computers) and it actually makes sense.

his book, the hero of a thousand faces, is actually really cool. he says much of the same stuff, but it makes sense because... well, it's a book about mythology.

poor joseph campbell. poor, old, senile joseph campbell...

Awww...it really wasn't so bad. I think I had to pick at it, though - I was part of a captured audience for 50 minutes. He basically made sense, or at least started to; I would be right with him, following along. And then he'd either take the story/analogy in an entirely different direction or else stop.
