This isn't stupidity, it is a complete focus upon the self. It's a kind of sociopathic self-involvement that makes people leave animals on the side of the road, because the dog has become inconvinient.

Or people who left dogs in backyards of the houses they were forclosed out of, and the animal basically starved to death.
