Turns out it was actually the hard drive controller, which is a MUCH easier fix - just swap out the motherboard. Ok, not that easy, but a lot better than attempting a recovery on a bricked drive.

It turns out Intel's 'Sandy Bridge' SATA chipset had a recall that I didn't know about - five days after I got the motherboard. Since it had been so long, the manufacturer wasn't able to do a direct swap, and I'd have needed to ship the motherboard back to be fixed, with probably a month-long turnaround time. Not happening. So, trip to Fry's, pull the old one out, put the new one in, plug everything back in, and it boots right up! Have to fix a few things, but it's humming along nicely.

Glad to hear that it was a (relatively) simple fix. Still, things like that make me long for "The Good ol' Days" when the OS fit on a ROM chip, or at least a 3.5" floppy. Viva Amiga! %)
