I loved reading your thoughts on this one. I didn't even notice the three menu items! Haha, so very Gibbs.
I never really made the connection that both Gibbs and Tony lost their mothers at a young age. (And boy, Gibbs's mother did look very young. Any guesses to how old Gibbs was when she died? And how did she die? I guessed it was a debilitating illness based on the reference to Jackson having to change her bed, but then she also talked about leaving and problems between her and Jackson.
The only substantial information we've had about Gibbs's mother before now was when he and Jackson talked about her in Heartland. Jackson said something to the effect that they had "a love story for the ages." Based on Ann's comments in this episode, I wonder if he was remembering things as he wishes they'd been, not as they were.
I love your commentary! I liked the episode too, though some of the diner and case scenes had a sort of fuzzy, unfocused feel to me that was unsatisfying - like they were trying to fit too much in and the plot just got vague. A hazard of the way they approached this episode I guess, and they did fit a lot in

It may have just been because I was incredibly sick while watching but while I liked it...I also didn't. It just didn't live up to the hype for me (maybe I was getting episodes confused too) and it was WAY TOO MUCH Gibbs. I like Gibbs, I do. But I'm bored. It's tiring and there was little of the other characters that weren't Gibbs/Tony. I get he's the focal point of the show but it was just like a rehash of the past 9 years. I loved the Shannon parts, but I'm confused as to why his daughter suddenly had super dark hair?

Gibbs's mother was a surprising element to the story, given how little we'd heard about her prior to this. And Mark Harmon did kill that scene.
