For Justicars it would depend on which one, a lot of them in my books are down right scary and I would not want to approach them. The Archon's depending on their history honestly there are some I wouldnt go near with a 10ft pole. But *shrugs* perhaps that is just me.

Aetius is not personable.

Actually, Aetius is a good example of how an archon should treat commoners. Not defending anything else about the character, but he has good poise.

Archons are around because someone, somewhere has fucked up. They aren't nice people you invite to dinner. They aren't your friends.

Justicars are not politicians. They are the top of the pyramid. And they should _not_ be glad handing people who have little-to-no renown.

But it's cool. Let them eat cake if they want.

Its okay, I wouldn't try to defend a lot about Aetius and he's my character. I am happy that he has good poise though. :-)

Justicars are not the top of the pyramid.

The Inner Circle is.

That's because they are Princes powerful enough to appoint the Justicars.

This view that the Justicariate is the end-all-be-all is my fundamental problem with Dale's question.

Depends on the political style. Even in the feudal era you had your approachable nice guys, same with roman times which some of the governmental style is based off.

Take into account the end of times, the "Elder" PCs that act like children and play D&D, and that the majority of the game takes place in the New World. When in Rome and all.

Should there be more hard asses? Yeah. But as long as there's child like people in positions of power with enough power to stand up to or beat the hard asses, its kinda tough.

You'd really have to enforce said genre, and you'd lose players/have alot of OOC whiners over it. Sacramento unfortunately tried this with Elder NPCs after they alienated 90% of their playerbase with IC and OOC things. It was fun and good genre, but ended up dying because they couldn't get thier player base back.

They still havent even with staff, IC, and OOC changes, but thats a drama and lack of stuff to do at game issue.

Yes, yes, kick babies...

Anyway, remember that Elizabeth I toured her kingdom to visit the masses. However, she was successful because the people were awed by her grandeur and nobility.

Yes, this.

Many of us have tried the darker, more aloof and intimidating style of play and leadership. The only time I've seen it work well over a long period of time was in an independent LARP that had a NPC Prince and a semi-NPC court of Officers. That was probably the best game I've ever played in too. :P

But long story short, moofinator hit it right on the head. The style of play we've gotten used to here in the States isn't quite the same WoD we see in the books. It's almost impossible to maintain that level of darkness - especially in long-term games in a huge, shared universe.
