(larp) Points...

Apr 09, 2009 02:18

In a conversation with someone about points on a sheet, I said:

In my experience, points on a sheet only affect two things
1) how big ST plots are
2) how many people come to your boot party

How you roleplay the character affects all the important stuff.

larp, it's all about the roleplay

Psh.

I plan on having tons of people come to my boot party. A boy only had it once.

Jordanus is more than invited. :-P

And you would be correct.

I'm guessing a few 7/5/3 are all that are necessary for me.

I completely agree.

Though I'd add #3: How many players complain about your sheet ruining their fun, even if the last time you used a discipline was telepathy on a mortal 6 months ago.

And you would be correct, also.

Mmmmm gotta disagree there. Lack of certain disciplines and points on the sheet can definitely affect your fun level. As in, if all you ever get to do is sit around and be chatty due to those factors, it kills interest pretty quickly. Yes, it is up to the player to generate their own fun, but perenially left behind whenever anything goes down does suck the ass.

It does inspire one to step onto a more RP stage, and that can be satisfying. Honestly I have yet to need to pull out my sheet at a single event... hell, most of the time I've been active in GA I haven't needed a sheet. But the points definitely matter, as do the key disciplines.

I think you are right in talking about key Disciplines. I think the sheet really matters when it comes to what plot you can do and what you can feel comfortable doing. However, I think once most sheets hit 200 XP or so, the points matter far less. There is a definite plateau where spending more XP really doesn't impact what you can or can't do.

That being said, one of my PCs is over 450 XP and there are still situations I need to avoid, because she's just not equipped to handle them.

Ideally, it would be all about the roleplay. However, it is very hard to bluff your way through things if other players know you have a tiny sheet (or a crappy Gen). Because LARP is a communal activity, often your roleplay experience can only be as good as the roleplayers around you.

What are the key disciplines?

I should have said key things rather than key Disciplines. It isn't the same for everyone, because it depends on what you want to do. If you just want to socialize and talk to other characters, you don't really need that much. If you want to be good at investigations, you will need some Auspex to be good at it.

It isn't that you "need" certain things to even try. You just need certain things to be good at it.

More XP also means you can do more by yourself. At lower levels, you get involved by going out in groups.
