I've read it before. It was assigned reading in 9th grade. And I've watched the movie numerous times (It's an awesome movie). But, I decided to reread it because I'll be leading a discussion on it on Tuesday (it's the 10th grade summer reading title at the local high school). Anyway. All I have to say is: Holy Carp. That is an amazing book. ( Read more... )

Funny you say that. You're considered anti-Alabamian if you don't express a tender love for the book. I found it...eh...okay.

Harper Lee supposedly wrote the book...I'm of the opinion that the whole thing was ghost written by Truman Capote.

I don't know. On the other hand, most of the kids I know wouldn't read anything, or would generally miss lots of great, culturally significant works. Not everyone's a self-motivator when it comes to reading.

I don't mean no required reading. There are ways to have assignments that oblige a student to become familiar with books I'm a fan of booktalking and then letting students pick what they want to read. And book reports are good, there's a certain amount of choice built into that. I disagree with having almost every book that's read for school be mandated by the curriculum and have everyone read the same thing.
