Movies?

Aug 20, 2008 20:19

I have slightly too much time and too little social life for the next couple weeks, and a good independent video store near by. Any recommendations of movies that I ought to see and might not have?

I've seen History Boys and A Fish Called Wanda, but not Arsenic and Old Lace. I'll see if I can get it.

(My opinions: History Boys was quite good but not great. I kind of feel like I don't get A Fish Called Wanda, or at least don't find it nearly as funny as most Monty Python, which is my automatic point of comparison because of John Cleese.)

Please do visit. I miss you too.

The Sweet Hereafter
On the Waterfront
Get Carter (the original one that doesn't have Stallone in it and which Stallone has apparently never seen)

Singh's The Fall is a movie I greatly enjoyed. It's about two hospital patients in the days of black and white movies, one a little girl and the other an early Hollywood stunt man, who help each other through through the telling of a fantastic story. Absolutely gorgeous film and probably my favorite film I saw in theaters this year.

Rudnik's Jeffrey was a movie I am oddly fond of. A movie that takes place in they heyday of the AIDS epidemic, it's a comedy with a serious twist surrounding a gay man's rejection of sex and love in the advent of the plague years. It's oddly populated by a large amount of well known actors for a semi-obscure film. Also, Patrick Stewart plays the perfect archetypal elder gay man.

Amazing, but stark, is Gus Van Sant's elephant, which explores a school shooting from multiple perspectives.

Another Van Sant film I liked was Paranoid Park, in which a boy tries to capture a traumatic event through a writing process that follows the looping and circular movements of the park the movie is named after.

I loved Elephant and liked Paranoid Park. I haven't heard of the other two, but I'll look for them.

On the Van Sant topic, I started Last Days and couldn't stand it, but I haven't seen his other movies. Have you seen any and found them similar/dissimilar to those two?

I've listed all the Van Sant films that I've seen, sadly. I keep on meaning to pick up more, especially My Own Private Idaho. I'll let you know if I ever get around to exploring those movies.
