About three years ago, I discovered things that, at the time, had only been questionable gossip (who tells family secrets and hypothetical scenarios when a pre-teen is listening to it? Lawd!) were true.
My dad’s fam is … a lot. Anyway, they’d mentioned that my grandmother had given up a baby (heavily hinted at female) for … reasons.

True. My dad’s is a bit much for anyone. Found a cousin about that time and we talked a lot. Friended each other on Facebook and - wow! She may have been adopted out of the family, but she’s hell on wheels just like the most of them (huh… wonder where I got that bad temper from). I knew her mom- visited when I was young and she was older teen. Smoked like a chimney, just like all of them did, and when we went to 7-11 for her smokes, she got me those candy cigarettes GenX recall fondly. My mom about fell out! 😂 My meek, straight-edge, highly religious mother was just not ready for that side of the family ( ... )

Ah, families. They can be pretty crazy. I have 13 uncles and aunts (seven uncles and six aunts) on my dad's side and one uncle, and six cousins on my mom's side. I have cousins I couldn't begin to account. Now that I have gotten older I am continuing to learn how absolutely weird both sides of my family tree were. It's all very confusing. These people we loved and who loved us are the same ones who left scars on our souls, some intentional, others not.
