work

Because I was having difficulties, I decided to pay for a lens rental so that I could approach these subjects with a true macro lens.  Safe to say that it was the closest I've ever gotten with a camera.  Like every new tool, I realized in post what I could have done better.  For macro,  it's making sure you are on a completely stable surface.  I ( Read more... )

Is that chicekn skin or something on a light table? Wonderfully ambiguous shapes with an amazing sense of 3 dimensionality, but I am dying to know what they are. Or would that ruin the mystery?

nubbins indeed

yeah, the scans didn't have a depth of field. the camera allowed that depth to occur.

no, it's ok to talk about it though i do enjoy the ambiguity.

They are the individual cells of an ugli fruit.

are you doing the mounting yourself, or having that outsourced?

which lens did u rent? i find with mine, since it goes from 1-1 to 5-1, that i can usually operate it hand held at 1-1 or 2-1, at 3-1 i need lights and 4/5-1 are still too shaky i can't get it to work even with a tripod. for that close, it has to be like, a vaccuum chamber with a robot arm. i want to get a new tripod that has a knob to let you "zoom" in and out in small amounts, like focusing an 8x10 on a track. my tripod doesn't do shit.

everyonce in a while i'll shoot something and think of you. not that this one is perfect, but there was another one that was soooo uncanily like something u'd shoot, but i didn't upload it, so u can only see a similar one.

ps- didn't u feel like u were shooting with a microscope. when i view the image at 150% i see things i could not even detect with my naked eye. i don't have the best eyes, but damn, these lenses these days kick ass.

I always think I'm looking under a microscope when I shoot now. Camera as a prosthetic eye. Luckily I'm the only one doing this sort of thing in my department. Though I can sort of tell now which things will look interesting and which won't just through experience.

I'm having it outsourced by the same company that does my professors. It's going to be pricey but well worth the effect. The lens, I am having trouble remembering, but it was a true macro lens (150????) that also came with a fine adjustment rail (awesome and new for these types of things). I'm going to look towards the bio department here at the university. Perhaps team up with someon in a department to do even closer work.

the picture is totally up my ally! thanks for thinking of me.

third to the last is my favorite. awkward fingers reaching heavenward.

you like the 'reaching' photos don't you. Makes them very animated.

i like the idea of reaching upwards in general. it wouldn't be the same if they were reaching down. then i'd see roots and it wouldn't be as great to me. the difference is that one is freeing and one traps you.
